Sweeter Lemon

Some people make lemonade – I'd prefer a sweeter lemon

There was a fire in our neighborhood a couple of weeks ago, and seeing the damage really made me reconsider a few things. For one thing, we never bought a firebox for our important documents that would be difficult to replace, so that’s at the top of the list the next time we get to a department store.

Seeing the extent of the damage also made me realize we might want to revisit our renter’s insurance policy to make sure that we’re adequately covered. We may want to boost it a bit, since we’ve made a few purchases that would be expensive to replace (like TV and the like). Since renter’s insurance is cheap insurance (compared to home owner’s, for instance), I think it would be a good idea to take the time to double check the policy and really evaluate if it’s at the right level of coverage.

Better to do that now, than not do it when we’d need it, right?

Isn’t it weird where you find your favorite products? In my lifetime, I must have bought dozens and dozens of different lip balms (I’ve even written about one before!) but my absolute favorite is one I got for free.

The last time I got my teeth worked on at the dentist, the assistant coated my lips with lip balm before the procedure. Then afterward, she gave me the wee little mini lip balm to keep. This tiny little sample size of Chap Ice in the Citrus Orange flavor has lived in my purse ever since. It’s my prize possession – whenever I use it, I am extra careful to put it back in the purse, when I switch purses I always make sure it didn’t get left behind.

I think it’s a combination of how smooth the balm is with the particular flavor (think orange creamsicle) that make it my favorite. That, plus scarcity – I have never, ever been able to find a replacement anywhere, and now that I’ve moved hundreds of miles away from that particular dentist, it’s not like I can get more from him. I couldn’t even find a decent image of it online anywhere, so it’s either just sold in bulk to dentists or it doesn’t have much of a marketing budget behind it.

But it goe to show you, you never know where you’ll find your favorite product. Maybe your butcher can lead you to the best diet pills you ever tried, or your manicurist will lead you to a great steak restaurant. It’s good to keep an open mind!

Well, I’ve had my Old Navy flip flops for over a week now, and I can say that I like them. I feared the plastic would blister my feet, but so far that hasn’t happened.

Interestingly enough, I discovered that the plastic soles on two of the pairs (the pink and red) are much softer and cushier than the others. This  makes them way more comfortable, on a softness scale. The other 5 pairs (I still haven’t worn the yellow ones!) are comfortable, but a little more sturdy than the 2 softer pairs.

I can definitely see why they’re so popular. They’re cheap, they have fun colors, and if you lose one on the beach or just wear them out, you don’t feel heartbroken since they weren’t a huge investment. Granted, they offer absolutely no arch support, so I wouldn’t recommend wearing them for long distance walks on your Vegas vacations or even just long hikes to the bus, but for general running around, I have to give them a thumbs up.
