The First Husband: BlogHer Book Club

Time for another BlogHer Book Club book post! This time, it’s The First Husband by Laura Dave.

The basic plot: Travel writer girl’s up-and-coming film director boyfriend, the man she had planned to marry, dumps her. Heartbroken girl randomly meets (cute) another boy, and after a whirlwind romance, marries second boy and moves to snowy New England. And guess who shows up on her doorstep a short while later? You guessed it. Boy #1.

I’m not giving the story enough credit with that brief outline, because this book was more than just a standard “who will she choose?” tale. Really, it’s more a story of figuring out exactly what it is that you want, and whether you’re brave enough to go for it. In Annie’s case, it’s not just choosing Nick or Griffin, it’s figuring out who she is and what that means as she moves forward.

I not only loved Annie in this book, but Laura Dave created a host of other characters that I really wanted to spend more time with. Griffin’s brother Jesse was by far my favorite character, and I definitely wished I had a boss as fabulous as Annie’s.
